VKG establishes new semicoke deposit site

The preliminary project for a semicoke deposit site, completed in February 2005, passed the environmental impact assessment successfully and was approved by the Ida-Virumaa Environmental Authority.

To make maximum use of the existing possibilities, a new deposit site will be established on the shelving slopes of the existing semicoke hills. The modern deposit site will employ a more environmentally sustainable depositing technology.

The cost of establishing the new deposit site will be clarified after the end of the underbidding competition. VKG hopes to commence construction work in 2006. If the work proceeds according to plan, VKGs new semicoke deposit will be ready in 2007.

VKG is establishing a new semicoke depository, as the existing disposal site does not meet the requirements of the EU landfill directive. According to the commitments assumed with the EU accession treaty, old landfills have to be closed or taken into compliance with the requirements of the landfill directive by mid-2009 at the latest.
